7th Network Meeting in Eindhoven (NM7): Winter School – IoT Challenge

Held from 22nd to 26th January 2024 at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), the seventh IoTalentum Network Meeting was organized as a Winter School and represented one of the project’s major training milestones. The event provided a valuable opportunity for Early-Stage Researchers (ESRs) to deepen their expertise by engaging with leading experts, fellow researchers, and industry professionals across the IoT ecosystem.

Over the course of five intensive days, the programme combined academic lectures, workshops, company visits, collaborative challenges, and mentoring sessions. Topics addressed included non-invasive health monitoring, secure data management, personal health technologies, and innovations in 5G infrastructures. Sessions were delivered by experts from TU/e and partner institutions, and participants were encouraged to actively contribute through project pitches and collaborative discussions.

During the winter school, the ESRs faced a challenge to demonstrate that they could apply the knowledge acquired through training courses and their own research to solve a problem in the IoT field—one that was completely different from the verticals they were used to working in: the 5G Vitality and Sport Challenge. The solutions provided by the different groups of ESRs were evaluated by industry experts not affiliated with IoTalentum.

The challenge was a success: the ESRs worked very hard and came up with various solutions, all of which were applauded by the challenge jury.

The Winter School also included the formal NM7 consortium meeting, during which ESRs presented the latest outcomes of their research across the work packages, and coordination boards discussed key project updates. As a training initiative co-organized by the ESRs themselves, NM7 reinforced IoTalentum’s commitment to intersectoral collaboration, skills development, and community building among the new generation of researchers in the Internet of Things field.
